{"id":3310,"date":"2026-01-31T15:40:38","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T20:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thunderofwade.com\/blog\/?p=3310"},"modified":"2026-01-31T15:40:39","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T20:40:39","slug":"fallible-as-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thunderofwade.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/31\/fallible-as-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"fallible as memory"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I tend to get songs stuck in my head.&nbsp; They play on repeat for a while, then another slots in from some other genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recently got a fragment of a jazz song stuck and I could neither place it nor get rid of it.\u00a0 It was instrumental &#8211;  so no words to look up &#8211; and I couldn\u2019t \u201csing\u201d it well enough for anyone else to figure it out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I assumed it was something I had heard from a Peanuts TV special and I poured through hours of soundtracks to try and find a match.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had pretty much given up and the song faded a bit, popping up in my head at odd moments, before\u00a0 &#8211; randomly &#8211; I saw a reference to Dave Brubek\u2019s Take Five.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t just any jazz song in my head, it was arguably one of the best known.\u00a0 And once I heard it, the song slotted neatly back into my memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, I was listening to a late 90&#8217;s\/early 2000\u2019s playlist and I was reminded of another song from that era.\u00a0 I remembered a female singer who belted out the refrain. \u00a0 British, maybe.\u00a0 Part of a band.\u00a0 But that was all I had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I put some effort into recalling the song and over a few days I could finally get the refrain looping in my head.&nbsp; The music and the intensity &#8211; but no words yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, a few days ago, I finally recalled enough to bring up part of the phrase she kept repeating: \u201c______as I am\u201d\u00a0 and I thought the band started with an \u201cS\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not enough yet, so I let that simmer in my head as my unconscious mind tried to slot every word I knew into that title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, while I was driving and stopped at a light, it clicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWeak as I am\u201d was the line. And the song was called \u201cWeak\u201d.&nbsp; &nbsp; As the light changed to green, the band popped into my head &#8211; \u201cSkunk Anasie\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satisfied, I drove on and listened to it when I got home.&nbsp; Good song, but maybe not one I want add to a playlist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been writing haikus for long enough that my memories in Facebook are littered with them.&nbsp; Since there\u2019s one for every day, patterns begin to emerge over the years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This morning, the steps and ramp out the back door were so ice covered that the dogs &#8211; and I &#8211; kept slipping.\u00a0 Once they were safely inside I went back out to chip away at\u00a0the thick ice with a small hammer.\u00a0 It was hard work and I had to stop a few times to rest.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get it all cleared and instead looked up Pet Safe Ice Melt.\u00a0 While I was online I got a notice about memories on facebook and opened it up.\u00a0 Sure enough, on the same day 4 years ago, I had written a haiku about chipping away at the ice to reach the patio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not just a creature of habit.\u00a0 I\u2019m a <em>documented<\/em> creature of habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, here in 2026, we have another kind of ICE to worry about.&nbsp; I\u2019m not going to go into it &#8211; there\u2019s enough media and rhetoric for a lifetime of blog posts &#8211; but it does remind me of my central problem with the history classes I took in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We, as a people, don\u2019t learn anything from the past.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter how many dates of wars we memorize or the names of eras and decades we decide on, we keep making the same mistakes of the past.\u00a0 I always found that frustrating and pointless in school.  If we aren&#8217;t learning and aren&#8217;t getting better at avoiding past mistakes, what&#8217;s the point? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, environments where the worst of humanity rise again and again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I muddle back through my personal memories that are unreliable, but inconsequential,\u00a0 and wonder if humans will get anything useful out of our own history.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I tend to get songs stuck in my head.&nbsp; They play on repeat for a while, then another slots in from some other genre.
