I turned 45 this past weekend – with very little fanfare. \u00a0The weather made it too dangerous for my family to travel for a visit, but I got some nice presents from Jim. \u00a0It was a pretty laid-back few days with a couple shopping trips and lots of video games.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strangely, the idea<\/em> of being 45 is worse than actually being<\/em> 45. \u00a0I\u2019m physically no different than when I was 44 and 364\/365 years old, but it \u201csounds\u201d older. \u00a0Like, middle aged.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll see my family this coming weekend for my niece\u2019s birthday and we\u2019ll celebrate mine then too.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had gotten out of the habit of swimming regularly and decided to try and get back in that habit this week. \u00a0I\u2019ve only gone a couple times and the pool has been crowded and noisy. \u00a0I\u2019ve had to share a lane and my form and speed are both off – but it does feel nice to get back in the water. \u00a0As the lap counter in my head ticks off each turn, I\u2019m reminded that I\u2019m a swimmer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though I wish Flaily McHogsALane would learn to stay on his side. \u00a0If he smacks me one more time, I\u2019m going to start taking it personally. <\/span><\/p>\n

The semester has started at UA and I was feeling pretty good about the schedule I\u2019d put together for the switchboard. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Too good, in fact, since the fates decided to show me the error of my hubris. <\/span><\/p>\n

One of my students assistants just. Stopped. Showing. Up. \u00a0\u00a0No phone call or email – nor any response to mine. \u00a0Just…not coming to work anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another student said they had talked to her and that she had dropped her classes and withdrew from school. \u00a0I get that – college isn\u2019t always for everyone – but a heads up would have been appropriate. \u00a0So, I\u2019m kinda bummed about losing a good employee and the hassle of keeping things covered until I can go through the whole process of hiring someone new.<\/span><\/p>\n

I read an article recently about some folks that \u00a0– aware they were spending too much time on their phones – deliberately made the phone \u201cless interesting\u201d by switching to Grayscale instead of full color. <\/span><\/p>\n

The idea being that we\u2019re simple creatures attached to bright colors. \u00a0Without that, the phone is less interesting than, say, the real world. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Intrigued, I gave it a try yesterday. \u00a0It\u2019s simple enough to change over, but the effect is serious. \u00a0The games on my phone hold less allure and Facebook doesn\u2019t catch me in the \u201cscroll forever\u201d that it used to. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Strange.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m free of the pull, but I kinda don\u2019t want to be. \u00a0What\u2019s the point of carrying this computer in my pocket all day if I\u2019m not addicted to it?<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ll keep it in that mode for a while, I think, just to see how it goes.\u00a0 Can’t quite live without it, but it’s no longer as important.<\/p>\n
