I got included on a post recently on Facebook with a number of friends from college and bounced around a few profiles to see what they had been up to. Most were the usual family and vacation photos, but on one profile was a smiling selfie with\u2026 Mike Pence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know the context of the photo or what was going on there, but one thing is clear: Pence is a scumbag of highest order. \u00a0Or would that be lowest order? \u00a0Anyway, he\u2019s awesome at being a terrible person. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I knew enough about him to be revolted, but the photo convinced me to look him up. Among the many terrible things he\u2019s done, he\u2019s also gone against LGBT rights at every single turn.<\/span><\/p>\n

At least he\u2019s consistent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking rights away from people – based on race, religion, sexual identity, social standing, etc. – just seems so obviously wrong to me. <\/span><\/p>\n

Almost…hmmm\u2026 self-evident. \u00a0Now, where have I heard that expression before? \u00a0Oh, yeah:<\/span><\/p>\n

We hold these truths to be self<\/b>–<\/span>evident<\/b>: that all men are created equal;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s right out of The Declaration of Independence<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such a powerful statement. \u00a0This truth needs no rationalization or justification. \u00a0It\u2019s as plain as day.<\/span><\/p>\n

All men are created equal.<\/span><\/p>\n

If someone is treating groups of people differently from others…if they are setting groups of people above other people…if some people are more \u201cequal\u201d than other.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well\u2026 all of that goes against The Declaration of Independence. \u00a0Sounds pretty un-American to me. <\/span><\/p>\n

Right there. \u00a0At the very start of our nation. \u00a0How does a politician today go against the document that marked the birth of our country? \u00a0How do they do they stand facing the flag on Independence day, and then pass laws that go against the very intention of our founding fathers?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sigh, again. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I honestly don\u2019t know. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And I still don\u2019t know the context of that photo – that smiling selfie – but I\u2019m absolutely certain that I would turn down a photo-op like that myself. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
