I got a fortune cookie with dinner last night that read \u201cYou will receive some high prize or award soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2026 was not that day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unless you count something going wrong with literally everything I did at work. \u00a0Which… I don\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing major, mind you. \u00a0Just a steady stream of annoyances. \u00a0Every single thing I touched went slightly to moderately wrong all day.<\/span><\/p>\n

At one point, I was trying to schedule a meeting that I didn\u2019t really want any part of \u00a0– but felt obligated anyway. \u00a0They asked when I would be available and I responded \u201cFriday afternoon\u201d. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGreat!\u201d they replied, \u201cWe\u2019ll see you at 11 on Friday!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, in what universe is 11 am \u201cthe afternoon<\/em>\u201d? \u00a0Since it\u2019s before 12 pm, it\u2019s literally impossible for that to be \u201cafter noon\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, as the day was winding up, I got contacted by a student who wanted help backing up their data. \u00a0And the only time they had to do it was right then – at 3 pm. \u00a0My day is usually done at 4, but I figured that we could wrap this up pretty quickly. \u00a0I was annoyed since I\u2019d already given her detailed written instructions, but, well, sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n

At 3:30, I got a call from the computer center saying that my appointment was there. \u00a0And that\u2019s great, except I don\u2019t work in that building. \u00a0So, I had them direct her across campus while I worked on a tedious project and settled into my pissy mood like I was wrapping myself up in a snuggie – assuming that I\u2019d be there late.<\/span><\/p>\n

The student arrived a few minutes later and we set to work. \u00a0She appreciated my help and I glanced at the dissertation files as we packaged them up. \u00a0Her dissertation was title:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHope and Suicide\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And things changed. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t just a student that needed some technology hand-holding, this was a future doctor that was committed to helping people. \u00a0And this wasn\u2019t just some data, it was a story about people\u2019s lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

We got everything backed up and saved in multiple formats. \u00a0And I\u2019m pretty sure she was about to hug me when she realized that might be unprofessional – and then settled for an enthusiastic handshake.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was 4:01 when I grabbed my swim gear and headed out the door. \u00a0I stopped on the way to my car to look over at the bridge where I had helped stop a guy from committing suicide back in October. \u00a0Just under the bridge is part of the towpath trail and some artists have painted a mural on the side of the bridge. \u00a0It reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cImagine you wake up with a second chance:\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been up there for a few weeks and I\u2019ve noted the coincidence, but never more strongly than today.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had a good swim, read a book when I got home and had some dinner. \u00a0Dishes washed, lawn mowed and now, blog updated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the thousand paper-cuts of annoyance, it turned out to be a good day after all.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
