I was doing a little paper folding and watching a dvd recently when I got a knock on my door. \u00a0It was a guy trying to sell home security systems – or, rather, smart<\/em> home systems.<\/p>\n

The company was one I had heard of and though I wasn\u2019t really interested I figured I could hear him out. He had an ipad with demos, talked about the features and deals, and then asked what features I\u2019d be interested in. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, I told him that I was actually more concerned about introducing potential vulnerabilities into his secure system the more devices were connected to it. \u00a0If my phone was compromised or stolen, or I hooked up a \u201csmart fridge\u201d with an unsecure password to my network, then his system \u00a0– no matter how secure – could be compromised as well and my physical and digital would be at risk. <\/span><\/p>\n

I apparently tipped my hand and he asked me if I worked in a computer field \u00a0– and when I said I did he said he could just tell. \u00a0Yeah, right. \u00a0He didn\u2019t address the connected devices issue (surprise), but instead went on to tell me about the video archives on a terabyte drive and the cloud storage. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

[Do I want video of what goes on in my backyard stored on the internet? \u00a0No, I do not.]<\/span><\/p>\n

Then he asked if I knew how many gigabytes were in a terabyte. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Really? \u00a0Quizzing the geek? \u00a0You wanna go down that road?<\/span><\/p>\n

I told him \u201ca thousand\u201d with a barely suppressed eyeroll as I mentally rounded and he replied that he thought it wasn\u2019t exactly a thousand. I sighed quietly, agreed, and told him it was 1024 because it was by powers of 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sigh, again.<\/span><\/p>\n

The deal included free equipment and installation – and then $80 a month for a system that I didn\u2019t want or need.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s just me here and my cat. \u00a0I\u2019m careful about locking my doors and I don\u2019t really own anything that valuable. \u00a0If someone does break in when I\u2019m not here, they\u2019re going to really disappointed. \u00a0If I am here, well, nothing says \u201ccrazy homeowner\u201d quite like a katana.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, no sale on a smart home. \u00a0I\u2019m fine with my dumb, but interesting, house with physical locks and a carefully monitored network. \u00a0And I hate the idea that I\u2019m supposed to feel afraid. \u00a0And that a camera on my doorbell will somehow make me safer. \u00a0Big brother is here – and we\u2019re spying on ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, seriously? \u00a0Don\u2019t try to out-geek a geek. \u00a0We are not to be trifled with.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
