{"id":1114,"date":"2012-05-07T22:25:31","date_gmt":"2012-05-07T22:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thunderofwade.com\/blog\/?p=1114"},"modified":"2012-05-07T22:25:31","modified_gmt":"2012-05-07T22:25:31","slug":"the-moon-mcdonalds-espn-deferred","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thunderofwade.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/07\/the-moon-mcdonalds-espn-deferred\/","title":{"rendered":"the moon, McDonald&#8217;s, ESPN, deferred"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One funny story I forgot from the weekend was when one of the kids I was with remembered that it was supposed to be a &#8220;supermoon&#8221; that night. \u00a0He raised his arm at a right angle with his hand pointed at his face and\u00a0solemnly\u00a0intoned\u00a0&#8211; &#8220;The Moon. \u00a0The Sun goes down, the Moon comes up,&#8221; \u00a0He&#8217;s 4 years old. \u00a0 It was a little funny and also every so slightly creepy. \u00a0Even after he was sent to bed, the adults in the room would occasionally look at each other, raise arms, and\u00a0solemnly\u00a0intone -&#8220;The moon&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I left work a little early today in order to get a bite to eat before my blood appointment. \u00a0I stopped at McDonald&#8217;s on the way and as usual, the place was chaotic. \u00a0Fryers beeping, customers ordering and arguing, kids fighting &#8211; the usual. \u00a0I tried to tune things out and eat my nuggets in peace when I happened to catch a snatch of the music playing over the speakers. \u00a0It was Annie Lennox &#8211; &#8220;No More I Love You&#8217;s&#8221;. \u00a0 Which is a\u00a0beautiful\u00a0and peaceful song. \u00a0I focused in on that and actually ended up with a small smile on my face.<\/p>\n<p>I got over to the donation site early and read \u00a0through the materials &#8211; then sat down in the line waiting to be called. \u00a0There was a guy two seats over who was loudly\u00a0reciting\u00a0the locations of the ESPN\u00a0restaurants\u00a0and super stores in North America. \u00a0It was the most boring bit of trivia I&#8217;ve ever heard and he just kept going on and on. \u00a0 I wondered if someone was helping keep track of him &#8211; seemed that he wasn&#8217;t quite able to function on his own. \u00a0I busied myself with some paper folding and tried to tune him out. \u00a0I may be a more than a little obsessive about origami, but at least I&#8217;m quiet about it.<\/p>\n<p>When it was finally my turn, I sat with the staff person and she did all the usual checks. \u00a0I told her that I had lived with someone in the past 12 months that had\u00a0hepatitis, but that I had been tested and was clear. \u00a0She thought that would be okay, but had me go through the health questions on the computer. \u00a0When that one threw a flag she had a couple other people over to discuss and they ended up deferring me for a year.<\/p>\n<p>Which sucks. \u00a0I thought I was doing the right thing with all of this &#8211; getting tested, disclosing, etc. \u00a0 But, the rules are the inflexible rules. \u00a0If I had been thinking ahead I would have brought the test results with me &#8211; though I doubt it would have done any good.
